BCR (Blackrock College Radio) is a radio station run by the Transition Year students of Blackrock College every year in aid of St Vincent de Paul. Transition Year is granted a special licence by the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) to broadcast from 8 to 5 every day for one week in November. BCR is a major undertaking involving the production of over 45 hours of radio in one week.
This year the station was run from Monday 20th to Friday 25th November 2006 and broadcast each day from 8am to 5pm. BCR is broadcast through a transmitter on top of the Tower in the school connected to “AV” room where the studio is. It was broadcast on 92.1fm over a 5 mile radius and the station was available all week live on the internet on www.blackrockcollege.com
The majority of the year was involved in this huge project, either by being on one of the BCR teams or through making a programme in one or more of their classes.
The BCR teams this year were as follows:
News, Sports, Technical, Advertising, Noon Show, Showcase, Guests & Requests, Continuity & Security.
Approximately 170 students took part in a very successful week of broadcasting. Guests during the week included Mary Hanafin, Enda Kenny, Ryan Tubridy, Geraldine Kennedy, Paul Howard, Gerry Thornley, Padraig Harrington, Maeve Binchy, Tony Ward, Brent Pope and Marita Conlon-McKenna. This unique project is a mammoth undertaking. The ability to broadcast for 45 hours is the product of tremendous teamwork. This year was particularly exciting as we moved from analogue to digital technology for the first time. This improved the quality of the broadcasts immeasurably. It also involved a huge amount of preparatory work and long hours in the studio. Great praise must go to the technical team, trained by Mr. Ed O’Farrell, Mr. Garry Sullivan and Mr. Mikhail Timofeev. Congratulations to all the students who participated and a special word of thanks to the teachers, who helped produce so many wonderful programmes. Last, and by no means least, many thanks to Ms. Nulty and Mr. O’Farrell for all the hard work, time and effort put in by them to ensure this project succeeded
