Blackrock College Radio is commonly regarded as the highlight of Transition Year in Blackrock College, and this year it most certainly was the highlight so far. For the whole month of November, the BCR room was a hive of activity, with recording, editing and research being feverishly done in preparation for the week of broadcasting. Many obstacles were overcome, and the week was overall a great success.
I'll now take the opportunity to thank the Transition Year Co-Ordinators, Ms. Nulty, Mr. Sullivan and Mr. O'Farrell, the Studio Managers, Conor Deegan and Tim Nugent, the Co-Ordinators, Seán Roper-Nolan, Matthew Finlay and Patrick Hinkson, and Technical Manager Adam Keogh. All these guided those involved and without them, the station could not have happened.
The week of broadcasting began on Monday 23rd of November with the News Show, 'Up and At 'Em', anchored by Conor Vaughan. Barry Andrews TD was the live guest in the morning. Mary Hanafin came in for the news on Wednesday, Ruari Quinn on Thursday and Enda Kenny on Friday. 'Up and At 'Em' was followed every morning by Showcase, with Showcase shows showcasing categories of music like 'Best Covers' with Cian O'Rafferty and 'Movie Soundtracks' ably hosted by Rory Lynam. The Irish Show 'Éist Linn followed Showcase, after which Guests and Requests. Guests during the week included Ryan Tubridy, Geraldine Kennedy, Dermot Whelan, John Giles, Niall Quinn and Leo Cullen.
After Guests and Requests was Guest Schools. Mount Anville, Holy Child, Coláiste Íosagáin, Sion Hill and Rathdown provided shows for 92.1. This was followed by Blackrock in Focus. We then went live to the noon show. The first noon show of the week was with Ivan O Shea and ran very smoothly. There were interviews with many people including Gerry Ryan on the Noon Show.
After that was talking sport, which each day featured interviews and features about a particular sport.
We then went to Showcase with more categories of music. On Monday and Thursday we went to the Latin Quarter in which Ms. Fitzgerald's class provided wonderful programmes, and on the other days we had Eurofile done by the language classes. Next was more from Guests and Requests which was followed by Serendipity.
Each day ended with Home Time news at 5:30. Eamon Gilmore was the guest for the show on Monday and Councillor Marie Baker was the guest on Thursday. Blackrock College Radio concluded on Friday the 27th after four hectic yet rewarding days of broadcasting with Maths and Music, by 47 Maths. The final song to be played on Blackrock College Radio 2009 was Millionaire by Dr. Hook, after which there was soothing yet somehow disappointing white noise on 92.1.
Thank you and well done to all those involved in BCR. It was a huge success and a great achievement by all!
